IF you’ve dined at the Riverside Hotel, chances are you’ve been greeted with a warm smile and firm handshake from Mannie Govender.
With decades of experience, Mannie has become the heart of the hotel’s restaurant, bringing charm, humour and a love for great food and company.
Mannie started as restaurant manager on May 4, 1998, after managing the Jewel of India at the Elangeni Hotel.
Recommended by a former colleague, he impressed the late Keith Bentley in his interview and has been a pillar at Riverside ever since.
His love for the industry comes from its ever-changing nature.
“Every day is different—breakfast rushes, VIP events, surprise celebrations,” he says. His ability to stay composed under pressure, along with his signature humour, sets him apart.
Some of Mannie’s fondest memories involve guests.
“The best moments are always about people,” he says. He recalls a surprise anniversary dinner where a husband secretly flew in his wife’s childhood best friend—executed flawlessly by Mannie and his team. “Seeing her joy was priceless.”
He also cherishes guests who return year after year, now bringing their children and grandchildren. “It’s like seeing family.”
One standout career moment was managing a high-profile dinner for 40 dignitaries during the 2005 NAM Summit in Durban. “Hosting prestigious guests requires precision, discretion, and excellence.” His ability to anticipate guests’ needs and create personalised experiences defines his dedication.
Beyond grand events, Mannie finds fulfillment in watching his team grow. “Seeing a staff member go from setup crew to leadership is deeply rewarding,” he says. Creating a workplace where employees feel valued has been key to his managerial style.
Over the years, Riverside Hotel has evolved significantly. “From transitioning between management groups to operating as an independent hotel, we’ve seen major upgrades – an outdoor spa, a stylish deck at Cyril’s Bar, restaurant renovations and a revamped conference centre.
These changes have solidified our reputation.”
When it comes to food, Mannie knows the Riverside Hotel’s menu like the back of his hand. “First timers must try the slow-roasted lamb shank – it’s tender, flavourful, and always a hit.” He also recommends the Traditional Mutton Bunny Chow, a Durban classic rich in spices and slow-cooked perfection. For seafood
lovers, the grilled king prawns with garlic butter sauce are a must. And to finish? “Crème Brulé – creamy, rich, with that perfect caramelised sugar topping.”
Mannie Govender’s passion and leadership have left a lasting mark on Durban’s restaurant scene, making Riverside Hotel a beloved destination for both guests and staff.
