The Old Durban Railway Station, now Tourist Junction is close to The Riverside Hotel
The old Durban Railway Station building was completed in 1892; it’s a Victorian Style railway station. Near this historical landmark you’ll find the St Paul’s Church and across the road is the Durban Post Office.
As a destination for tourists, you’ll have a number of historical buildings to admire, with a market and the typical hustle and bustle of a big city around you.
There is a plaque on the wall, commemorating Mahatma Gandhi – “Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi took the first step in his struggle against all forms of discrimination and oppression when he boarded a train at the Durban station on 7th June 1893. His forcible removal from the train at Pietermaritzburg on grounds racial prejudice had a profound influence on Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of life and on his future. He himself said that the dedication of his life to the cause of human justice and equality began from that experience. ‘My active non-violence’ he said, started from that date.”
Today you’ll find that this is home to KZN Tourism and is called Tourist Junction.
The building is located on the corner of Monty Naicker Street and Soldiers’ Way.
